This coffee comes from the CoopeTarrazú cooperative in San Marcos, Tarrazú, Costa Rica. It is an F1 hybrid (first generation offspring) of the Rumesudan and Villa Sarchi varieties of the arabica plant. F1 hybrids are growing in popularity in coffee producing regions due the the lack of biodiversity among the commonly produced coffee varieties.
Many varieties of the coffea arabica plant are very genetically similar. Due to this genetic similarity, there is considerable risk that disease could decimate large populations of coffee plants, despite the plants being of different varieties. As climate change continues to lessen the world's total landmass adequate for coffee production, the risk of disease greatly impacting coffee production grows. F1 hybrids were created to combat this risk. These hybrids were intentionally bred for their resiliency to disease.
In addition to their practical application in prolonging the viability of coffee farms in regions suffering the effects of climate change, these coffees also tend to present a very sweet, balanced, and pleasant cup. This coffee is exceptionally juicy with notes of strawberry, orange zest, brown sugar, and cola.
